Beijing, China, February 4, 2022: IOC member Mikee Cojuangco Jaworski has taken time out from her busy schedule in Beijing to send a heartfelt message of congratulations to the women’s national football team on qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time.
Speaking in a video message from her hotel room in Beijing, where she has been attending the IOC Session as a member of the Executive Board, Mikee said she was just one of many who wanted to “show some love” for the team.
“It’s such an amazing feat and I can’t even express how excited I am for all of you,” Mikee said.
“I know it’s been a long road. It’s never easy, and now you’re going to get to do this for our country, for your families, for yourselves. I’m just so excited, I really don’t know how to say anything more.
“I am just happy to get this chance to be one of those to congratulate you.”
Mikee said she would be cheering and praying for the team on the road to the World Cup and urged them to have a great time as they have provided another inspiring moment for the nation.
The Philippines qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 by reaching the semi-finals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in India, beating Chinese Taipei in a penalty shootout to make history for football in the country.
In the semi-finals, the Philippines lost 2-0 to Korea but now know they can plan ahead for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
The Philippine Women’s National Football Team replied: “Thank you Mikee! And thank you to the Philippine Women's Football Association for all their support including arranging this.”
