Wang, Haughey named Asian swimmers of the year by SwimSwam

Austin, United States, January 6, 2022: Olympic heroes Wang Shun of China and Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, China have been named Male and Female Swimmer of the Year respectively by the prestigious Texas-based SwimSwam.com website.

Haughey enjoyed a medal-filled year, the highlights of which were two Olympic Games silver medals in the women’s 100m and 200m freestyle at Tokyo 2020 and two gold and one bronze medal in the FINA short-course (25m) world championships in Abu Dhabi, where she set a world record in the 200m free and a championship record in the 100 free.

During the year she set nine Hong Kong records, five Asian records and one world record.

The Hong Kong swimmer, who graduated from the University of Michigan, won the SwimSwam Asian female swimmer of the year award for the third consecutive year.

SwimSwam gave an honourable mention to Yui Ohashi (Japan) and Zhang Yufei (China).

Wang won the gold medal in the men’s 200m individual medley at Tokyo 2020 in an Asian record of 1:55.00.

That gold medal swim took out Kosuke Hagino’s former Asian record of 1:55.07 from 2016 and made Wang the third fastest man in history behind Ryan Lochte (1:54.00) and Michael Phelps (1:54.16).

SwimSwam gave an honourable mention to Hwang Sun-woo (KOR), Tomoru Honda (JPN) and Daiya Seto (JPN).
