Doha, Qatar, December 23, 2021: Doha is ready to host another world-class international sports event with the 20th FINA World Championships in 2023 featuring all six aquatic disciplines.

Addressing the FINA family in Abu Dhabi recently, the Director General of the 2023 FINA World Championships Doha Organising Committee, Khaleel Al Jabir, said sport had been at the heart of Doha’s remarkable growth in recent years.

“Doha is a modern city, an established international destination; it is a city passionate about sport,” he said.

“We believe the FINA Championships will be a spectacular event that will create the framework for the aquatic sport development, promotion and excellence and even that will leave a long-lasting legacy.”

The 20th FINA World Championships, together with the FINA World Masters Championships, will be held in the month of November 2023 - perfect conditions in and out of the water at between 24-25C, he said.

To reflect the compact concept of Doha, all competition and non-competition venues will be located within a 15km radius so that the athletes will have “the best facilities and best services and an excellent competition environment to perform”, added Khaleel.

There will be two competition venue clusters: Aspire Zone and the Museum of Islamic Art Park.

Within Aspire Zone, the Aspire Dome will be transformed into the biggest indoor aquatics venue in the world, with temporary seating for 10,000 spectators and hosting the artistic swimming, swimming and water polo. The Hamad Aquatic Centre next door will stage the diving.

The second competition cluster will provide a breathtaking backdrop and a temporary venue for open water swimming and high diving.

The opening ceremony will be at the Katara Amphitheatre of the Katara Cultural Village.

The presentation also pointed out that Doha has 56,000 hotel rooms and serviced apartments, an award-winning international airport, convenient metro system as well as a progressive visa service to assist in the smooth participation of teams from around the world.

NOTE: The 19th FINA World Championships will be in Fukuoka, Japan from May 13-29, 2022.
