Hong Kong’s Olympic swimming hero Haughey breaks short-course world record in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, December 16, 2021: Siobhan Haughey started writing her name into the history books in Tokyo with the first swimming medals for Hong Kong China at the Olympic Games – two silver medals in the women’s 200m and 100m freestyle events.

She added another chapter on the first night of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, December 16 with a first world title – and a world record in the women’s 200m freestyle.

Haughey has been in great form in the short-course season since Tokyo 2020 last summer and finished the race in 1 minute, 50.31 seconds. This shaved 0.12 seconds off the previous world record of 1:50.43 set by Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom in 2017.

The Hong Kong swimmer was rewarded with a prize of 50,000 USD on the pool deck – a bonus all world record-beaters will receive from FINA at the world short-course championships.

Elsewhere, Japanese all-rounder Daiya Seto continued his golden streak by winning the 200m Individual Medley comfortably for his fifth short-course world title.

Bouncing back from the utter disappointments in Tokyo (no medals, despite arriving as the reigning world champion in both medley events), Seto was in a commanding mood once again as he expanded his winning streak to five editions, claiming gold in each world championships since 2012.
