Manama, Bahrain, December 13, 2021: The President of Bahrain Olympic Committee, HH Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, presented middle distance runner Maryam Jamal with a gold medal from the London 2012 Olympics at a special ceremony at Al Wadi Palace on Saturday, December 11.
The Bahraini athlete had finished third in the women’s 1,500 metres at London 2012 but was promoted to first place when both the gold and silver medal winners were disqualified for doping-related offences.
The presentation ceremony began with the playing of the Olympic anthem, while other procedures to honour Olympic winners were followed as per IOC guidelines.
After that, HH Sheikh Khalid delivered a speech, welcoming the attendees and wishing the Bahraini athlete every success in the coming races.
The event also included a keynote address from BOC Secretary General Mohamed Hasan Ali Al Nusuf, who expressed sincere congratulations on this accomplishment on behalf of the BOC. He said that this achievement was a result of the support of the wise leadership of the sports movement and the instructions of HH Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Maryam Jamal, 37, expressed sincere thanks and appreciation to HH Sheikh Khalid for his support throughout her career.
A number of senior sports leaders attended the ceremony, including HH Sheikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Vice President of the General Sports Authority; Aymen bin Tawfiq Almoayed, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs; Dr Abdulrahman Sadiq Askar, CEO of the General Sports Authority; and Mohammed Abdulatif bin Jalal, President of Bahrain Athletics Association.
