Malaysia NOC thanks mixed doubles badminton team after split

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, December 7, 2021: The Olympic Council of Malaysia has thanked Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallists Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying for their service to the country in mixed doubles badminton.

Goh, 32, posted on social media from Bali, Indonesia, to say the couple would not be playing in the BWF World Championships in Huelva, Spain next week and that they had decided to end their partnership after 13 years.

She said the wear and tear on their bodies, the age factor in their early thirties and the uncertainty caused by the pandemic had brought about their decision after losing in the semi-finals of the BWF/HSBC World Tour Finals in Bali last week.

Goh and partner Chan, 33, represented Malaysia with great distinction over several years and won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

They also competed in the Asian Games, SEA Games and Commonwealth Games and were ranked No. 9 in the world in mixed doubles.

“Thank you and all the best,” the OCM said in a Facebook post.
