Nine contenders for Best Athlete at Kazakhstan NOC’s National Sports Awards

Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, December 6, 2021: Public voting for the Altyn Samgay 2021 National Sports Awards organised by the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan ends today, December 6.

Sports fans have been voting since November 22 in six different categories: 1. Best Athlete in Summer Sports; 2. Best Athlete in Winter Sports; 3. Best Coach in Summer Sports; 4. Best Coach in Winter Sports; 5. Team of the Year; 6. Breakthrough of the Year.

A total of nine athletes have been nominated for Best Athlete in Summer Sports. They include the eight bronze medallists from the Tokyo Olympics 2020: boxers Saken Bibossinov and Kamshybek Kunkabayev; judoka Yeldos Smetov; weightlifters Igor Son and Zulfiya Chinshanlo; karatekas Sofya Berulseva and Darkhan Assadilov; and wrestler Nurislam Sanayev. 

The ninth athlete is Jamilya Bakbergenova, who won a silver medal in the women’s wrestling 72kg category at the World Championship in Oslo, Norway.

The winner will be announced at the National Sports Awards ceremony in mid-December with a dedication to the 30th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Due to the ongoing pandemic the Awards ceremony will be held in a hybrid form with a virtual online celebration also being added.

Other award categories that will be recognised include: Best Region among Physical Education and Sports Departments; Best National Federation; Best Athlete and Coach in Paralympic Sports; Best Sports Medicine Specialist; and Heritage of Kazakhstani Sports.
