Jakarta, Indonesia, December 3, 2021: Olympic swimmer Azzahra Permatahani believes the activities and profile of the Indonesian Olympic Committee’s Women in Sport Commission can boost the participation of females at all levels of sport.
Azzahra, 19, was guest speaker during a talk show organised by the Women in Sport Commission in order to promote female participation in the Olympic movement.
"I am very proud and I welcome this initiative from the Women in Sport Commission,” said Azzahra, who competed in the women’s 400m individual medley at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
“I believe the Commission's programme can boost women's participation in sport, not only as athletes but also as trainers and administrators.”
The talk show also addressed National Teachers Day on November 25. Azzahra said her teachers had played a big part in her sports career, during which she has already represented Indonesia in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, Asian Games, Olympic Games, FINA World Championships and Youth Olympic Games.
"As a student-athlete I had to train in the morning before going to school, and my teachers understood my choice. They gave me special attention. They also supported me to reach my goal as an athlete while reminding me of my obligations as a student,” she added.
The main speaker during the talk show was Women in Sport Commission member Shelly Selowati, who is an Executive Committee member of the Asian Boxing Confederation and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
Shelly’s main message was that women needed to support each other on their journey to the top.
"It's a man's world in the international boxing federation. That's the challenge - how we can survive as women in that world, how we can reach the top,” she said.
“We have to be sincere. We have to master the skills. The most important thing is that we must help each other.
"We want to see Indonesians go forward, in particular Indonesian women. To put Indonesia forward must be our primary goal so that the red-and-white flag can fly high. It all starts with ourselves."
The Women in Sport Commission is supported by Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) as sponsor.
