New Delhi, India, December 2, 2021: India’s Anju Bobby George was named Woman of the Year at the World Athletics virtual awards night on December 1.
World Athletics said: “The former international long jump star from India is still actively involved in the sport.
“In 2016 she opened a training academy for young girls which has already helped to produce a world U20 medallist.
“A constant voice for gender equality in her role as Senior Vice President of the Indian Athletics Federation, Bobby George also mentors schoolgirls for future leadership positions within the sport.”
The Sports Authority of India issued the following statement: “Many congratulations to Anju Bobby George on being crowned Woman of the Year 2021 at the World Athletics Awards.
“We applaud your continual efforts and contributions to take Indian Sports to new heights. A proud moment for Indian Athletics.”
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India added: “You are India’s pride.”
In her video message, Anju Bobby George said she was “really, really happy” to be considered for the award.
“As an athlete, it was a hard journey – but I still believe I could reach the level which I deserve. And now it is my turn to give back to our sport,” she said.
She explained that her academy - the Anju Bobby Sports Foundation - was nurturing 13 women athletes and “small kids” and that, within three years, they would be starting their journey to the world stage.
“I thank all my supporters, all my fellow athletes, coaches, my family, federation and everyone who stood with me during my journey,” she concluded.
