Phnom Penh, Cambodia, December 1, 2021: The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia believes that the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon next month will help ease the Kingdom out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, December 1, NOCC Secretary General Vath Chamroeun said the organisation of the event had received the full support of the Prime Minister.
Cambodian sports officials believe that the popular half marathon in Siem Reap province combines sport and tourism as it attracts runners from all over the country as well as foreigners living in Cambodia.
The 26th Angkor Wat International Half Marathon 2021 – known as the Angkor World Heritage Charity Race – will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2022 under the patronage of the NOCC and sponsored by Manulife. The race will feature only people living in Cambodia and will not be open for visitors due to the pandemic restrictions.
“The organisation and preparations of the half marathon have received approval from the Prime Minister of Cambodia and there is still one week to register for the event,” Vath told the press conference.
“Sports tourism will benefit from the Angkor Wat International Race Day as it will promote the beautiful green scenery and gardens of Siem Reap province. Every runner can have fun and run the race for their health.
“We believe that the race will restore sports tourism and have social and economic benefits as we emerge slowly from the COVID-19 crisis. We need to support this international tourism event both in spirit and in participation and this will bring back jobs in the coming days.”
