Iran, Korea win gold at first World Taekwondo Women’s Open in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, November 28, 2021: Russia finished top of the medal standings at the first World Taekwondo Women’s Open Championships to be held in Saudi Arabia.

Russia won two gold medals, four silver and two bronze in the three-day championships, which ended in the Saudi capital on Saturday night, November 27.

Polina Khan won gold in the women’s -73kg category and Galina Medvedeva won the top prize in the women’s -49kg class.

Iran, South Korea, Brazil, Great Britain, Turkey and Ivory Coast also won one gold medal each at the Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Olympic Complex. A total of 171 athletes and coaches from 36 countries competed.

The podium finishers were presented with their medals on the final day of competition by the Vice President of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, Prince Fahd bin Jalawi bin Abdul Aziz. 

Also in attendance was the President of the World Taekwondo Federation, Choue Chung-won, as well as the President of the Saudi Taekwondo Federation, Brig. Gen. Shaddad Al-Omari, and the Undersecretary of planning and development at the Ministry of Sports, Adwa Al-Arifi.

Iran’s Zahra Sheidaei won the gold medal in the women’s -57kg while Korea’s Kang Mi-reu won the women’s -46kg category. A total of eight weight categories were contested.
