Macau, China, November 24, 2021: The Sports Bureau of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with mainland sports authorities to bring China's Olympic champions to Macau.

Macau has frequently hosted star athletes from China, not only to honour their achievements but also to visit schools and give sports demonstrations to provide inspiration to youngsters in Macau and increase their interest in sport and the Olympics.

TDM (Teledifusao De Macau) reports that the head of the Macau Sports Bureau, Mr. Pun Weng Kun, is striving to bring Chinese champions from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and other top athletes to Macau in the middle of next month.

He says the response from the General Administration of Sport in China is positive and supportive.

“We hope that the athletes can visit Macau,” said Mr Pun.

“We are aiming at the middle of next month. This visit will help promote patriotism and love for Macau among all Macau residents and encourage more people to care about sports and sports training. The General Administration of Sport is also very supportive during our discussion.”

However, there are still a lot of details to be discussed.

Mr. Pun expects that about 30 national team athletes, including Olympic champions from Tokyo 2020, will be visiting Macau.

China finished second in the Tokyo 2020 medal standings behind the United States with 38 gold medals, 32 silver and 18 bronze for a total of 88 medals.
