Phnom Penh, Cambodia, November 22, 2021: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, Dr. Thong Khon, believes the hosting of the Olympic Council of Asia’s 5th Asian Youth Games in 2029 will further promote the “Kingdom of Wonder” to Asia and the world.
Cambodia signed a host city contract with the OCA at the 40th General Assembly in Dubai on November 21 and the NOCC President feels the eight-year countdown to the AYG will keep the country in the sports and tourism spotlight.
Dr. Thong, who is also Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism, said: “Cambodia is honored and excited and stands ready to host the Asian Youth Games in 2029 in Phnom Penh, our capital city.
“We would like to express our profound gratitude and much appreciation to the OCA for granting us this marvelous opportunity.
“I can assure you that the Royal Government of Cambodia has been working very hard on improving infrastructure and construction transformations to host the 32nd Southeast Asian Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games 2023 for the very first time in our country’s 64-year history and the 5th Asian Youth Games 2029 - namely the new Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap Angkor and its surroundings, the northeastern and southern coastal regions and, most importantly, the newly completed Morodok Techo National Sports Complex which will significantly contribute to Cambodia’s economic and social development as well as the Olympic movement.”
Dr. Thong said the government was also paying close attention to sport by organising the National Games every two years since 2016, and that this event would return in 2022 after the pandemic.
“As of November 15, 2021 the Royal Government of Cambodia has officially announced the reopening of the country and will welcome all fully vaccinated international tourists and travelers without any state quarantine at all international gateways and checkpoints,” he added.
Other sports events are planned, such as the Southeast Asian Sailing Championships from December 12-17, 2021 in collaboration with the Singapore Sailing Federation at Preah Sihanoukville, as well as business and tourism forums.
