Doha, Qatar, November 14, 2021: Nine years after winning the high jump bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim’s medal has been upgraded to silver following a decision from the IOC.

The IOC executive board on Friday, November 12, stripped Russia’s Ivan Ukhov of his gold medal for doping resulting in Barshim being reallocated the silver medal.

American high jumper Eric Kynard’s silver medal was upgraded to gold with Barshim and two others who had tied for the bronze medal receiving silvers. The other two are Derek Drouin of Canada and Robbie Grabarz of Britain.

At this year’s rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Barshim won Qatar’s first Olympic track and field gold medal when he shared the high jump gold with Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi after both recorded a best clearance of 2.37 metres. After three failures at 2.39 metres, the athletes decided against a jump-off after an official said both could have gold medals.

Barshim, who also won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, now has a gold medal and two silver medals from the last three Olympics.
