Olympic champ Chen among badminton awards nominees

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, November 11, 2021:  China’s Olympic Games women’s singles badminton champion Chen Yufei is among the star names in the list of nominees for the Badminton World Federation Player of the Awards 2020-21. 

The nominees in eight categories were announced on Thursday and Chen, who won the title in Tokyo, leads the four candidates for female player of the year. The other three contenders are Carolina Marin (Spain), the Rio Olympic champion who missed Tokyo 2020 with a knee injury, Olympic silver medallist Tai Tzu Ying (Chinese Taipei) and Akane Yamaguchi (Japan). 

Due to COVID-19, the eligibility period was extended to cover the 2020 and 2021 seasons (1 November 2019 to 31 October 2021), headlined by the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. 

Two new award categories were introduced – Pair of the Year and Para Badminton Pair of the Year. 

The eight categories are: Male Player of the Year, Female Player of the Year, Pair of the Year, Most Improved Player of the Year, Eddy Choong Most Promising Player, Male Para Badminton Player of the Year, Female Para Badminton Player of the Year and Para Badminton Pair of the Year. 

The winners will be announced during the Bali Leg of the HSBC BWF World Tour in Indonesia. More details to follow.
