Double celebration for Iran on National Paralympic Day

Tehran, Iran, November 19, 2019: Hamed Amiri won a gold medal at the Dubai 2019 World Para Athletics Championships last Wednesday, November 13, coinciding with countrywide celebrations back home to mark National Paralympic Day. Iran celebrated its 12th National Paralympic Day last Wednesday with the participation of around 60,000 students with physical and vision impairments. On the same day in Dubai, javelin thrower Amiri claimed gold with a throw of 29.77 metres to win the F54 event by one centimeter ahead of Greek athlete Manolis Stefanoudakis. Iran’s Mahdi Olad also won a gold medal in men’s shot put. In total Iran won two golds, four silvers and a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships which brought together 1400 athletes from 120 nations. Iran is one of Asia’s top-ranked countries in Paralympic events. At last year’s Asian Paralympic Games in Indonesia Iran finished third after winning 51 golds, 42 silvers and 43 bronze. Iran is targeting a top-10 finish at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. In Rio 2016, Iran finished in 15th place. Source: Mehr News Agency
