Doha, Qatar, October 15, 2021: Tokyo Olympian Abdulaziz Al Obaidly will take another big step on his swimming journey when he heads a 13-strong Qatar team at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Doha later this month.
Al Obaidly, 20, represented Qatar in the Tokyo Olympics, swimming in the men’s 200m breaststroke.
He also competed in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia and in the FINA Short Course (25m) World Championships in Hangzhou, China at the end of 2018.
The third leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup will be held at the Hamad Aquatic Centre, Aspire Zone from October 21-23 and follows earlier legs in Berlin, Germany (October 1-3) and Budapest, Hungary (October 7-9).
Qatar’s 13-strong team is: Abdulaziz Al Obaidly, Abdullatif Ebrahim, Abdulla Ali, Mohammed Fahad, Nour Eddine, Mohammed Ali, Hamza Mahmoud, Mohamed Aziz, Abdulrahman Ali, Abdulla Jassim, Yousef Abdulaziz, Khalid Fahad, Ibrahim Ahmed.
In announcing the four-leg calendar on August 24, FINA President Husain Al Musallam said: “The FINA Swimming World Cup has become an iconic annual meet that is greatly valued by the entire swimming community.
“The world's best-ranked athletes participate every year and outstanding performances are always witnessed. This year, the World Cup circuit is a qualifier for the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), where increased prize money will also be distributed.”
The penultimate meet of the World Cup series in Doha promises thrilling races as the star-studded field looks to secure maximum points before heading to Kazan (RUS), which will be the final stop of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2021 from October 28-30.
“We are looking forward to exciting races in Doha. We are hopeful that it will be another memorable experience for all the participants. We wish the best of luck to all the athletes,” Qatar Swimming Association President Khaleel Al-Jabir said in a statement.
All four stops of the 2021 World Cup will be competed in 25m pools and are qualifying events for the postponed 15th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) to be held in Abu Dhabi (UAE) from December 16-21, 2021.
The total prize money dedicated by FINA to the SWC 2021 represents US$ 1.452 million.
