New Delhi, India, October 11, 2021: The Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra has raised the prospect of India bidding for the 2036 Olympic Games with the International Olympic Committee.
This was confirmed by IOC President Thomas Bach who has revealed that a long queue of suitors, including India, were in line to host the Olympics in 2036, 2040 and even beyond.
On Saturday, October 9, IOA President Batra disclosed a possible bid by India to host the 2036 Summer Olympics with Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad as the venue for the Opening Ceremony and the showpiece athletics event.
“If we talk about the 2036 Olympics, then yes, we are already talking to the International Olympic Committee. Being the President of IOA, my discussions with the IOC happen on the subject….2036 Olympics will be finalised in two-three years and we are currently discussing with IOC,” Batra told the Press Trust of India.
Batra also disclosed that the Games could be held in three or four Indian cities.
IOC President Bach recently revealed that among the aspiring hosts for 2036 and beyond were India, Indonesia, Germany and Qatar.
In July, Brisbane, Australia was chosen as host of the 2032 Olympics. The 2024 Olympics will be in Paris and 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
A proper presentation for India’s bid will be prepared following IOA elections in December 2021, Batra said. India is one of six or seven possible candidates for the 2036 Games, he added.
The Motera Stadium was renamed as ‘Narendra Modi Stadium’ by the Gujarat Cricket Association in February this year. It is the world’s largest cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 132,000 spectators.
