UAE’s Sheikh Salem elected Asian fencing president

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, October 10, 2021: Sheikh Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi was elected President of the Asian Fencing Confederation at the General Assembly held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Saturday, October 9.

Sheikh Salem, who is the President of the Arab and United Arab Emirates Fencing Federation, won 24 of the 38 votes at the election for the top post which was attended personally or through video conferencing by representatives of the 38 member countries. Singaporean Francis Kong polled 14 votes.

Sheikh Salem, dedicating his victory to the wise leadership of the UAE, said: “The fact that people from the UAE have taken international positions is not the result of the moment but the result of tireless work over many years and the support of our wise leadership and our wonderful people.”

Malaysia’s Roseni Abul-Hassan won the post of Secretary General of the Continental Federation.

Others who won positions on the executive committee include Saudi Arabia’s Ahmed Al-Sabban, President of the Saudi Federation of Fencing, who was elected Vice President, and Iraq’s Fencing Federation President, Ziyad Hasan Jassim, who was named a member of the board of directors.
