Erbil, Iraq, September 11, 2021: The General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq was held at the Ramada Hotel in Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, on Saturday, September 11.
The meeting was chaired by the President of Iraq NOC, Mr Raad Hamoudi, and attended by the Spokesperson of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Mr Jotiar Adel, along with youth and sports directors, other dignitaries and more than 30 members of the General Assembly.
The General Assembly began with a minute’s silence to mark the first anniversary of the passing of the former Iraqi football star and coach, Nazim Shaker, who died of covid-19 complications in a hospital in Erbil on September 11, 2020.
Following this, the NOC President outlined the main points on the agenda such as the formation of an ethics committee, the establishment of a centre for settlement and sports arbitration, the future of the Olympic movement in the provinces and the development of sports federations.
KRG Spokesperson Jotiar Adel expressed his pleasure in hosting the meeting in Erbil and said it highlighted the unity of the country. He added that the region and its sports facilities would always be available for athletes and officials in order to help them prepare for championships.
The General Assembly agreed unanimously to reactivate the work of the NOC representatives in the governorates and postponed the formation of the centre for settlement and sports arbitration and ethics committee until the next meeting.
