Malaysian sports family joins 64th Independence Day celebrations

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 31, 2021: The Malaysian sports family joined in the celebrations for the 64th National Day on August 31.

The President, Executive Board and management of the Olympic Council of Malaysia offered their greetings along with several prominent sports figures including retired squash world champion Nicol David, Olympic divers Pandelela Rinong, Leong Mun Yee and Wendy Ng Yan Yee and former and current badminton stars Lee Chong Wei and Goh Liu Ying. 

“Happy 64th Merdeka Day from all of us at OCM to you! Let us celebrate the power of sports in bringing all of us together,” said the OCM.

“The President, Executive Board and management of the Olympic Council of Malaysia wish all citizens a Happy 64th National Day.

“National Day is celebrated on August 31st every year to remember the historical moments of the Malay Federation reached independence from British colonialism in 1957.

“Hopefully the independence achieved 64 years ago can be lived by all layers of society.”

Mixed doubles badminton Olympian Goh commented: “Happy 64th Merdeka to my beloved country, Malaysia. I am very proud to be a Malaysian and very blessed to have lived in a peaceful and multiracial community since I was born. 

“This Merdeka, our vision is to defeat this covid-19 pandemic together. I love you, Malaysia. Let’s all remember to take our safety measures and stay safe and healthy.”

Pandelela Rinong posted: “Happy 64th Independence Day, Malaysia. May my country be blessed with God's blessings.”

Retired squash star Nicol David said: “My greatest happiness and honour is to be able to represent my country. Happy Merdeka Day everyone!”

Artistic gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi greeted “Happy Independence Day, Malaysia! Always proud to hear Malaysia's name in the world”, while diver Wendy Ng Yan Yee posted: “On this special day I wish for the health and safety of everyone of Malaysia. Happy Independence Day!”
