Singapore, August 31, 2021: The Singapore National Olympic Council has described the late IOC President Jacques Rogge as a champion of youth sports – and thanked him for putting Singapore on the Olympic sports map.
In a Facebook tribute, the SNOC said the Olympic Movement had lost “a dear friend and champion for sports and youth” with the passing of Dr Rogge, the eighth President of the International Olympic Committee, at the age of 79.
“Dr Rogge was a fervent champion of sports, including youth sports, and inaugurated the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG) which Singapore hosted in 2010,” the tribute said.
“In 2010, he also launched the Singapore Olympic Foundation, a legacy of the YOG to support Singapore sports. Singapore also hosted the 2005 IOC Session and 2013 IOC International Athletes’ Forum during his tenure as IOC President from 2001 to 2013.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Anne and family, mourn the loss of an Olympian, friend and champion of sports and youth. Rest in peace, Dr Rogge.”
