Thimphu, Bhutan, August 12, 2021: There will be no time for Olympian Sangay Tenzin to rest with the teenager set to represent Bhutan at the 15th FINA World Swimming Championships in Abu Dhabi, UAE in December.

Bhutan will be represented by Sangay Tenzin and Kinley Lhendup in the short-course showcase event (25 metres) in the United Arab Emirates from December 16-21.

Tenzin, 17, participated at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first Bhutanese swimmer at the Games. He achieved a personal best of 57.57 seconds in the 100m freestyle. He is still in Japan, and will return home on Saturday, August 14.

With the support of FINA, the International Swimming Federation, Tenzin and Lhendup have been training in Phuket, Thailand for the past two years along with swimmers from more than 12 countries.

Tenzin will re-join his countryman in Thailand in October and will continue his journey to try and lower his personal best in Abu Dhabi in the 100m free and 50m free. Lhendup, also 17, will take part in the 100m and 50m butterfly events.

Tenzin said an important lesson he had learned from Tokyo was discipline. “I’m confident I’ll do my best for the upcoming competition in the United Arab Emirates.”
