China finishes second in medals table with 38 gold, one behind USA

Tokyo, Japan, August 8, 2021: China finished second in the Tokyo 2020 medals table at the close of play on Sunday afternoon.

China won 38 gold medals, 32 silver and 18 bronze to finish runners-up in the final rankings to the United States (39-41-33).

The United States also finished first on total medals, 113 to the 88 of China.

Host nation Japan came in third with 27 gold medals, 14 silver and 17 bronze for 58 – ranked fifth in total medals.

Great Britain came in fourth with 22 gold medals and the Russian Olympic Committee was fifth with 20.

China’s strongest sports were diving and weightlifting as they both contributed seven gold medals.  Shooting and table tennis were the next most productive with four gold medals.

Japan dominated the judo competition at Nippon Budokan by winning nine gold medals. Wrestling was the next best with five gold medals, while Japan added four gold medals in two of the new sports – skateboarding (3) and karate (1).

Korea was Asia’s third-placed NOC and 16th in all with six gold, four silvers and 10 bronze. Four of the six gold were achieved in archery.
