Qatar’s Asian Games beach volleyball champions clinch Olympic bronze

Tokyo, Japan, August 7, 2021: Qatar added a bronze medal to their two gold medals at Tokyo 2020 when they won the third-place play-off in men’s beach volleyball on Saturday morning.

The Asian Games champions Cherif Younousse, 26, and Ahmed Tijan, also 26, beat Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs of Latvia 2-0 in 41 minutes to clinch the bronze medal at Shiokaze Park.

The bronze medal added to the two gold medals in men’s weightlifting and men’s high jump and took their medal haul to three.

The experienced Qatari duo won the first set 21-12 in 18 minutes and the second set 21-18 in 23 minutes to earn a richly deserved Olympic medal following their heroics on the world beach volleyball circuit.

They won all three preliminary round Pool C games here by 2-0 and then advanced from the last 16 and quarter-finals, only to see their run ended in the semi-finals by the Russian Olympic Committee.

Qatar had finished ninth in men’s beach volleyball at Rio 2016.
