Hong Kong China NOC celebrates Olympic milestone with second medal of Tokyo 2020

Hong Kong, China, July 28, 2021: The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China issued a press release on Wednesday, July 28 to mark the historic swimming medal of Siobhan Haughey – a silver in the women’s 200m freestyle. 

It is the first swimming medal won by Hong Kong at the Olympic Games and makes it the first time Hong Kong has won more than one medal at a single Olympics, following the gold medal of fencer Cheung Ka Long. The statement reads:  

“The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) is proud to announce that Ms. Siobhan Bernadette Haughey has won a silver medal today in the Women's 200m Freestyle competition in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for Hong Kong.  

“This is the first time for Hong Kong in attaining two medals in the Olympic Game since its participation in 1952 carving a milestone in the history of Hong Kong sport. 

“The Hong Kong, China Delegation have shown the world their feistiness and power after Ms. Haughey won the silver medal in the competition. This is Hong Kong athletes' second medal in this Games and the first ever Olympic medal for Swimming following the gold medal by Mr. Cheung Ka Long in the Men’s Foil Individual event. 

“SF&OC conveys our heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Haughey. She has demonstrated great perseverance and determination throughout the competition. Her relentless effort deserves respect and acclamation from the Hong Kong sport community. SF&OC also thanks and appreciates greatly the support of Siobhan's coaches and the entire swimming team. 

“SF&OC looks forward to our Hong Kong athletes in continuing their best effort and dedication to achieve outstanding performances in the remaining competitions in the Games. We also thank the HKSAR Government in their continued support to Hong Kong sport and our athletes.  

“Also, our gratitude to Hong Kong Sports Institute for the technical support not to mention the Sports Science and Sports Medicine team in their dedication and preparation to ensure that our athletes are in their best physical and mental condition before going to the Games.”
