Gamini Jayasinghe takes key Olympic role for Sri Lanka

Tokyo, Japan, July 19, 2021: One of the most important parts of a multi-sport games is the meeting of the Chefs de Mission – the team leader of all the delegations.

The appointment of the CDM is a great honour to the recipient, but it also carries with it a great deal of responsibility in guaranteeing the smooth participation of the team and dealing with any problems that may arise regarding accommodation, transportation, training or other matters.

In Tokyo, as far as Team Sri Lanka is concerned, this honour falls to Mr. Gamini Jayasinghe, who is pictured attending the CDM meeting on Monday, July 19 – just four days before the opening ceremony on July 23. Gamini is also the treasurer of NOC Sri Lanka.

“The Chef de Mission is the person who is in charge for a contingent (country),” Sri Lanka NOC posted on Facebook on July 19.

“Prior to the Games start, a final brief will be given by the Organising Committee. At this Tokyo 2020 Games, it shall be done by the TOCOG - Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Since there are 206 countries taking part in the Games, 206 CDMs will be attending this meeting today.”

In other news from Sri Lanka, the youngest member of the delegation, swimmer Aniqah Gaffoor, 17, will join up with the team in Tokyo later today after travelling via Bangkok.

Aniqah will compete in the 100m butterfly. She has already won two international medals at the South Asian Games in Nepal when she was 15 years in 2019.
