Boxing great Mary Kom thanks former Sports Minister Rijiju for ‘tremendous efforts’ for India

New Delhi, India, July 12, 2021: Indian boxing legend MC Mary Kom has paid tribute to former Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, who has taken over as the Union Minister of Law and Justice.

The six-time women’s world boxing champion and London 2012 flyweight bronze medallist said in a Facebook post: “The greatest smile, that will always remain and be cherished in my heart.

“Your generous contributions...tremendous efforts in every field of sports will be profoundly respected. My sincere congratulations Kiren Rijiju sir on your new role as Union Minister of Law and Justice.”

Mary Kom, who will carry India’s flag at the Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony on July 23, wished the new Sports Minister Anurag Thakur all the best.

“My best wishes to new Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Shri Anurag Thakur. I am fully confident that he will take forward all those great initiatives to make India a powerful sporting nation.”

Former BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) President Anurag Thakur succeeded Kiren Rijiju as India's new Union Sports Minister on Wednesday, July 7.

Thakur, 46, has also served as the secretary of BCCI and the head of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association

The Indian Olympic Association announced recently that MC Mary Kom and men’s hockey skipper Manpreet Singh would carry India’s flag on July 23, and that wrestler Bajrang Punia would do the honours at the closing ceremony on August 8.
