Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, July 5, 2021: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced the final list of qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Monday, July 5.

A total of 87 male and 86 female players representing 50 National Olympic Committees from the five continental confederations have been selected in the five events – men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles.

Rio 2016 men's singles gold medallist Chen Long (China) is the only defending champion in any of the five categories.

In the women’s event, Rio 2016 champion Carolina Marin (Spain) is missing due to a knee injury, but silver medallist PV Sindhu (India) and bronze medallist Nozomi Okuhara (Japan) will both be back.

The strength of Asia in badminton is highlighted by the fact that 13 of the top 15 in men’s qualification are Asian, including 2018 Asian Games champion Jonatan Christie (Indonesia) at No. 7, while the top eight players in women’s singles are all Asian, including Chinese Taipei’s Asian Games champion Tai Tzu Ying at No. 2.

BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer congratulated all Tokyo 2020 Olympians on their selection: “All of you who have qualified for Tokyo 2020 can be proud, for this is an exceptional achievement. Being part of an Olympics as a participant is a rare opportunity and an honour, and these memories will be with you for a lifetime.”

The draw for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be held on Thursday, July 8 at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes, England and will be Live Streamed on BWF channels.
