Nepal NOC holds farewell ceremony for swimming team bound for Tokyo Olympics

Kathmandu, Nepal, July 5, 2021: The Nepal Olympic Committee held a farewell ceremony on Sunday, July 4 for swimmer Alexander Shah who will compete at the Tokyo Olympics later this month.

Shah and his coach, Shankar Karki, left for a training camp in Tokushima Prefecture in Japan on Monday, July 5, and will be joined there by England-based Gaurika Singh. Both swimmers have received International Olympic Committee’s universal quota berths at the July 23-August 8 Olympics.

Nepal NOC President Jeevan Ram Shrestha congratulated the swimmers and stressed the importance of good behaviour at the Games saying it was as important as competing.

Also present at the farewell ceremony were Executive Board members of the NOC and the President of Nepal Swimming Association, Ashok Ratna Bajracharya, who is also a Vice President of the NOC.

The President of the Nepal Swimming Association called for both athletes to give their best and reminded them it was a proud occasion to represent the country at the Olympics.

Alex Shah and Gaurika Singh will train in Tokushima Prefecture for the next couple of weeks before moving into the Olympic Village on July 20 

The parents of both swimmers were also present at the farewell ceremony as well as officials from the Nepal Swimming Association, Vice President Rajesh Bajracharya and member Mukunda Raj Sharma.
