Sania Mirza to become first female athlete to represent India at four Olympics

New Delhi, India, July 4, 2021: Tennis ace Sania Mirza will be the first woman to represent India at four Olympic Games when she features in the women’s doubles competition at Tokyo 2020.

Mirza and Ankita Raina will compete in the women’s doubles after entries were officially announced last Thursday, July 1. Raina will be making her debut.

Kiren Rijiju, India’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, congratulated the Indian duo and tweeted: “I congratulate @mirzasania and @ankitachamp, who will represent India in Women’s Doubles Tennis at #Tokyo2020 after entries were officially announced. This will be Sania’s 4th Olympics while it will be Raina's debut. All the best to them. #Cheer4India.”

Mirza made her Olympic debut in women's singles at Beijing 2008. She then appeared in the women's doubles at London 2012 and Rio 2016.

The 34-year-old Mirza is a former doubles world number one. She has won six Grand Slam titles – three women's doubles and three mixed doubles. An offensive baseliner, Mirza was India’s top ranked singles player from 2003 until her retirement from singles in 2013.
