Rio Olympian Hassan Saaid highlights Maldives team for Tokyo 2020

Male, Maldives, June 29, 2021: Maldives Olympic Committee has confirmed a four-strong team of athletes for the Olympic Games in Tokyo next month.

The team is led by 100m sprinter Hassan Saaid – the fastest man in South Asia after winning the Maldives’ first gold medal in the history of the South Asian Games at Nepal in 2019.

Hassan, 29, has a personal best of 10.33 seconds, according to World Athletics, and is the national record holder at 100m, 200m and 400m in the Maldives.

He also competed at Rio 2016, winning his heat in the preliminary round to qualify for the first round proper.

In Tokyo, Hassan will be joined in the Maldives team by two swimmers – Aishath Sausan and Ali Imaan – and badminton player Nabaha Abdul Razzaq.

“Meet the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Team from Maldives. Competing in athletics, badminton and swimming they will all be proudly representing our small island nation. Congratulations and best of luck to all the players,” Maldives NOC said in a Facebook post on June 27.
