Thimphu, Bhutan, June 28, 2021: Bhutan Olympic Committee reports that the Kingdom will be represented in judo at the Olympic Games for the first time in history, in Tokyo next month.
This honour will fall to Ngawang Namgyel, 23, who will compete in the men's -60kg category.
The Bhutan Judo Association received confirmation from the International Judo Federation about Ngawang’s selection through the wildcard entry from the Tripartite Commission to ensure global representation in sports.
Currently, he is training in Thimphu. Ngawang was one of the three judo medalists from Bhutan at the South Asian Games in Nepal in 2019.
The Bhutan team for Tokyo 2020 is boosted to four athletes, along with archery (Karma in women’s recurve), Lenchu Kunzang in women’s rifle shooting and swimmer Sangay Tenzin in the men’s 100m freestyle – also another first for Bhutan.
