Baghdad, Iraq, June 18, 2021: Iraq has named a 20-strong squad for the first international appearance of the women's rugby sevens team at the West Asian Rugby Sevens Championship in September.
Head coach Hussein Ammar has picked a preliminary squad which will be later pruned to 12 players who will create a piece of sporting history, representing Iraq for the first time in an international tournament.
“The West Asian Championship will be the first international tournament the Iraqi women's team will be participating in, and it will be an important event for the team to develop female players' capabilities,” Ammar said.
Ammar hopes Iraq Rugby will be able to arrange a few friendly matches before September’s tournament – the venue of which is still to be decided – so his squad can buckle down to some serious training.
