Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 15, 2021: The Badminton World Federation reported that Indonesian men’s doubles hero Markis Kido died of a heart attack on Monday, June 14. He was 36.
“Sad news coming in. Former Olympic gold medallist and world champion Markis Kido (Indonesia) passed away today due to a heart attack. He will be missed,” BWF said in a statement on June 14.
Markis Kido won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics partnering Hendra Setiawan, a year after the pair had won the men's doubles title at the World Championship in Kuala Lumpur in 2007.
He also won the World Cup title in 2006 at Yiyang, Hunan province and Asian Games gold at Guangzhou four years later, also partnering Setiawan.
The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) said in a statement that former player Candra Wijaya witnessed Kido collapse while playing badminton at a sports complex in Tangerang. Kido has played badminton at the venue every Monday, Reuters reported.
PBSI chairman Agung Firman Sampurna said Kido's death was a "huge loss" for the Indonesian badminton family, which is preparing for next month's Tokyo Olympics.
