SEA Games Federation votes against postponement of 2021 SEA Games

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, June 10, 2021: The South East Asian (SEA) Games Federation office called a special meeting on Wednesday, June 9 to discuss the views of its members in relation to the proposed postponement of the 31st SEA Games 2021 to July 2022.

Due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the region, it is the wish of the Organising Committee of Vietnam to host the 31st edition of the SEA Games in a safe and secure manner.

A majority of eight out of 11 SEA Games Federation member countries objected to the proposed postponement of the SEA Games due to the busy sports schedule next year, including the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in September 2022. Additionally, many of the countries are already in the midst of preparations for this year's SEA Games.

The SEA Games Federation office will work closely with the organising committee of Vietnam in the next two weeks for a solution to be tabled to the SEA Games Federation Council for endorsement.

The 31st SEA Games are due to be held in Hanoi and 11 neighbouring cities and provinces from November 21 to December 2, 2021 with 40 sports and 526 events. A total of 10,000 athletes and officials from the 11 National Olympic Committees in the SEA region are expected to attend.

The 32nd SEA Games will be hosted by Cambodia in 2023.
