Maldives NOC announces Tokyo 2020 badminton place for Naba

Male, Maldives, June 5, 2021: The Maldives Olympic Committee is proud to announce that Olympic Solidarity scholarship athlete Naba Abdul Razzaq has been awarded a Tripartite Commission invitation to compete in the badminton tournament at Tokyo 2020.

“MOC would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ms. Nabaaha for her efforts and determination that has been exhibited,” the MOC said in a statement on June 3.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase her efforts and make the whole Maldives proud once again like her unforgettable performance at the Indian Ocean Island Games 2019.”

In an emotional Facebook post, Naba said: “The last four years of my career has been a long and difficult road. Having to face a difficult decision to either continue with my education or drop it to pursue my career in badminton.

“With my family’s constant support and encouragement, I was able to make the decision to continue my career as a full-time athlete because of my love for this sport. Despite many obstacles I faced, I spent my days working hard to make my country proud.

“Along the road I’ve had many great achievements. But my lifelong dream has always been representing Maldives in the Olympics. And today that dream came true.”

The Tokyo-bound badminton player thanked her family, especially her twin sister Naby, for their support as well as the Badminton Association of Maldives for providing her with the opportunities to participate in tournaments to boost her ranking and also the Maldives Olympic Committee for assisting in the Olympic Games selection process.

“Despite the difficulties and lack of training this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I will give my absolute best at the Olympics and use this experience to bring more glory to our country in the future,” she concluded.
