Thimphu, Bhutan, June 3, 2021: Shooter Lenchu Kunzang will represent Bhutan at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Bhutan Olympic Committee confirmed last Friday, May 28, that the International Olympic Committee through the Tripartite Commission had allocated a wild card berth for Kunzang to compete in the women’s 10m air rifle event at the July 23-August 8 Games.

It will be the second Olympic Games for the 30-year-old Kunzang following her maiden appearance at the 2016 Rio Olympics which was also on invitation.

Wild card entries are granted to countries to ensure universal participation at the Olympic Games.

Kunzang will join archer Karma in the small Bhutanese contingent in Tokyo. Karma became the first athlete from Bhutan to qualify for an Olympic Games when she won a spot for Tokyo during the Asian continental qualification tournament in Bangkok in 2019.

The Bhutan Olympic Committee confirmed that Team Bhutan will be represented by an archer, shooter and a swimmer at the Tokyo Games.

In the fray for a berth in the pool are Kinley Lhendup and Sangay Tenzin, both of whom have been training at the FINA centre Thanyapura in Phuket, Thailand for the last two years.

Having participated in the 18th FINA World Championships in Gwangju, Korea in 2019, Bhutan has become eligible to take part in swimming in the Olympic Games through the invitation process.
