Afghanistan and Iran NOCs discuss sports cooperation

Tehran, Iran, June 1, 2021: The heads of the Afghanistan and Iranian National Olympic Committees have discussed cooperation between the two countries on the sporting field at a meeting in Tehran on Sunday, May 30.

During a visit to Tehran, Afghanistan NOC President Dr Hafizullah Wali Rahimi stated that his country could benefit in sports with increased ties, noting that Iran “can contribute significantly to the development of Afghan sports.”

Dr Rahimi met with the President of the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Reza Salehi Amiri, and heads of a number of national sports federations in Iran.

President Salehi Amiri said Iran was ready to “enhance sports cooperation” with Afghanistan and agreed that it would entail the exchange of sports knowledge and development of sports relations.

The Afghanistan sports chief revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had a damaging impact on sports in his country with many federations struggling to maintain facilities.

At the meeting, the heads of Iranian national sports federations of volleyball, wushu, karate, taekwondo, rowing, handball and basketball were present. They all expressed a willingness to transfer sports knowledge to Afghanistan.
