Shantou, China, May 17, 2021: Organisers of the Asian Youth Games Shantou 2021 are feeling on top of the world following an epic expedition highlighting the vigour, vitality and determination of youth.

The mascot and flag of the OCA’s 3rd AYG – due to take place this November – were carried to the top of Mount Everest by Hong Genglong, President of the Shantou Long Distance Running Association.

Hong informed the world of his successful mission in a WeChat moment on May 13, writing: "At 10am Beijing time on May 11th, I successfully climbed the summit of Mount Everest from the southern slope of Nepal. I have returned to Kathmandu safely."

The content shows that he carried the Shantou 2021 Asian Youth Games flag and the flower mascot Jin Fengwa on his journey to the top of Mount Everest to convey the voice of the Asian Youth Games through a notable and worthwhile action.

According to Hong, the 2021 Mount Everest (South Slope) climbing team was comprised of nine people. They gathered in Kathmandu and planned their ascent and descent from the summit on the southern slope.

The expedition took 23 days and involved meticulous planning due to the impact of the pandemic, the weather window for the climb, the number of climbers, the status and availability of the mountain guides, logistical support, rescue teams on standby and other factors associated with such an arduous climb. All these factors played a part in the overall success of the mission.

A jubilant Hong told reporters: “This climb has been a sporting goal for the past few years. The fact that the Asian Youth Games are being held in Shantou is very meaningful and important for the Shantou people. This is why we were so proud to take the Asian Youth Games banner to the top of the world.”

The slogans of the expedition were “Asian Youth Rise – Climb to the Top of Shantou” and “Climb the Peak Forever – Create New Glory”.

Hong’s feat and his pride in Shantou and the Asian Youth Games will inspire everyone connected with the AYG, which will be held in this port city in Guangdong province from November 20-28, 2021, and highlight the vigour and ambition of youth in reaching the top.
