Tokyo, Japan, May 12, 2021: Asian representatives Hong Kong and Kazakhstan learned their fate for the World Rugby Sevens Repechage tournament for Tokyo 2020 at the draw on May 11.
The final two women’s spots and one men’s place at the Tokyo Olympics are up for grabs at the final qualification tournament in Monaco on June 19-20.
In the women’s repechage, 12 nations were drawn into three pools of four teams. The top two in each pool (six teams) and the two third-placed teams with the highest point totals qualify for the knockout stages (eight teams).
After the quarter-finals, the winners of the two semi-finals will qualify for Tokyo 2020.
Women’s draw:
Pool A: Russian Olympic Committee, Argentina, Mexico, Samoa
Pool B: Papua New Guinea, Kazakhstan, Jamaica, Tunisia
Pool C: France, Hong Kong-China, Colombia, Madagascar
In the men’s tournament, 10 teams were drawn into two pools of five. The top two sides from each pool will progress to the semi-finals. The winner of the final will book the last ticket to Tokyo.
Men’s draw:
Pool A: Samoa, Ireland, Tonga, Zimbabwe and Mexico.
Pool B: France, Hong Kong-China, Chile, Uganda, Jamaica
In Asian qualifying, China won the women’s event and Korea won the men’s event.
There will be 12 teams in each event at Tokyo 2020, and 21 of the 24 teams are already confirmed.
