Mongolia’s wrestling strength boosts Olympic team to 26 athletes

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, April 19, 2021: Team Mongolia for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games this summer has been expanded by five athletes from wrestling, taking the total so far to 26 athletes.

The latest members of the delegation secured their quota places at Tokyo 2020 through the Asian Olympic wrestling qualifier in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Women’s wrestling qualifiers Ts. Namuuntsetseg (50kg), B. Bolortuya (53kg) and B. Khongorzul (57kg), along with men's super-heavyweight M. Lkhagvagerel (125kg), will make their Olympic debut, while Tokyo 2020 will be the third Olympics for 39-year-old veteran O. Burmaa (women's 76kg), who competed at Athens 2004 and London 2012.

Two Mongolian wrestlers had already booked their tickets to Tokyo and were joined by the five from Almaty, making seven in all on the wrestling team.

Wrestling is the most popular sport in Mongolia. Athletes in wrestling captured the first four Olympic medals for Mongolia at Mexico 1968 and the sport now has collected eight Olympic medals.

At present, Team Mongolia consists of 26 athletes: archery (1), athletics (3), 3x3 women’s basketball team (4), boxing (3), shooting (4), swimming (2), table tennis (2) and wrestling (7).

The President of the Mongolian Wrestling Federation, P. Gansukh, sent a congratulatory message to all wrestlers for their achievements.
