Asian NOCs mourn passing of HRH Prince Philip

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, April 12, 2021: The President, Executive Board and management of the Commonwealth Games Association of Malaysia conveyed their deepest condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation, and His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Vice Patron of the CGF, on the passing of HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday, April 9 at the age of 99.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Her Majesty and the British Royal Family during this period of bereavement,” the Olympic Council of Malaysia said in a statement.

OCM also posted a photograph of HRH Prince Philip at the launch ceremony of the Queen’s Baton Relay for the XX Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 from October 9, 2013, at Buckingham Palace.

In the photo, Prince Philip is accompanied by Her Majesty the Queen, Lord Robert Smith, Chairman of the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee, and HRH Tunku Imran, who was President of the CGF at the time.

*Bhutan Olympic Committee reports that His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen offered prayers and lit 1,000 butterlamps in memory of HRH Prince Philip at the Mongar Dzong on Saturday, April 10. 

Upon Royal Command, special prayers have been held in monasteries across Bhutan.

In Thimphu, HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, who is President of Bhutan Olympic Committee, was joined by the Foreign Minister, British residents in Bhutan and Bhutanese who studied in the UK in offering prayers and lighting 1,000 butterlamps at the Simtokha Dzong.
