Phnom Penh, Cambodia, April 5, 2021: The main stadium of the new national sports complex being built for the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2023 is 95 per cent complete, according to organising committee CAMSOC.
The Secretary General of CAMSOC and of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, Vath Chamroeun, says the construction work is expected to be completed by the end of next month.
Officially known as the Morodok Techo National Stadium, the complex also includes an aquatic centre, an indoor sports centre, a training field and a training hall.
In addition to the sports infrastructure, a sports village to accommodate 7,000 athletes and officials is also being built for the 11-nation SEA Games in 2023 – the first time in the history of the event that Cambodia will be the host.
Secretary General Vath said that CAMSOC and the NOCC were working hand in hand with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport to organise international sports competitions in 2021 and 2022 to prepare the local athletes and to test the new sports venues. It will also provide experience in dealing with the pandemic.
The main stadium will have a capacity of 60,000 and will host the opening and closing ceremony of the 32nd SEA Games in 2023.
The 30th SEA Games were held in the Philippines in 2019 and the 31st SEA Games is planned for Vietnam this November.
