Kabul, Afghanistan, March 31, 2021: The President of the Afghanistan National Olympic Committee, Dr. Hafizullah Wali Rahimi, held an official send-off ceremony for the national weightlifting team heading for the Asian Weightlifting Championships next month.
The 2020 Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) Weightlifting Championships will take place at Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from April 16-25.
The event should have been held last year but were postponed in April because of the pandemic; however, it will retain the Tashkent 2020 status. It will also serve as a gold level qualifying event for the Tokyo Olympic Games this summer from July 23 to August 8.
Afghanistan is sending five athletes to the event and they were all wished the best of luck by the NOC President before their departure to Uzbekistan in the hope they can secure a coveted quota place for Tokyo 2020.
The athletes and coaches will join a training camp ahead of the championships.
