Hangzhou 2022 releases colourful signage design for 19th Asian Games

Hangzhou 2022 releases colourful signage design for 19th Asian Games

Hangzhou, China, March 26, 2021: Organising committee HAGOC unveiled the signage design for 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in 2022 on Friday, March 26.

To mark the occasion, a ceremony was held in the Hangzhou studio of signage designer Zhou Feng, associate professor in the Department of Visual Communication, School of Design at the China Academy of Art.

The design concept draws inspiration from both Liangzhu Yucong - jade relics from pre-historic Liangzhu culture in Hangzhou - to represent hospitality, the pursuit of excellence and the determination to succeed, and from the Tidal Bore of the Qiantang River, which symbolises vitality.

The dominant colour for the signage is rainbow purple, used in a selection of hues. The sport pictograms on the signage have soft edges to reflect the city’s gentleness and tranquility.

Mr. Mao Genhong, Deputy Secretary General and Director of the HAGOC Executive Office, said: “As the basis for the look and image of the Hangzhou Asian Games, the design of the signage will play an essential role in managing the circulation and flow of pedestrians and vehicles during the Games. The signage will help to create a great atmosphere for the event.”

The OCA Director General, Mr. Husain Al-Musallam, praised the colour scheme and concept for the look of the Asian Games evident in the signage design.

“Signage of the Games in any sporting event plays a significant part in the promotion of the Games as well as leaving a lasting legacy of the Games,” he said.

“The OCA is very happy with the attractive look and distinctive signage of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022. We are sure it will contribute to the festive atmosphere and vibrant appeal of our next Asian Games.”

The signage will be used primarily at venues, directing pedestrian and traffic flow, movement to and from specific areas for athletes and team officials, VIPs and media, and to provide information to the public.

Signage information has been designed to be displayed in different zones and arranged in layers to make the signs much easier for people to read.

The Olympic Council of Asia’s 19th Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province in eastern China, from September 10-25, 2022. There will be 40 sports, 61 disciplines and 482 events.
