Colombo, Sri Lanka, March 25, 2021: Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya in Colombo has been crowned champions of the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) Debater 2020 competition run by the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka.

The contest was held under the auspices of Olympic Solidarity and the Olympic Council of Asia.

The awards ceremony took place at the Sri Lanka NOC’s Hemasiri Fernando auditorium on Wednesday, March 24. The first runner-up was Hillwood College, from the central hill capital of Kandy, and the third place was taken by Chundikuli Girls’ College, from the north of the island, Jaffna.

OVEP is a global educational tool created by the International Olympic Committee to promote themes like fair play, respect for others, pursuit of excellence and a balanced life of body, mind and will.

With this in mind the Sri Lanka NOC inaugurated the OVEP Debater in 2017 as a pilot project targeting schools in the Colombo and Kandy region.

On this second occasion, the programme was taken island-wide, and online due to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The winning team from the Colombo 7 school comprised Detuni Perera, Sandamini Dayaratne, Thinalie Weerakoon and Laseni Chemanthi.
