Asian Championships to count as triathlon qualifier for Tokyo 2020

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 24, 2021: The Executive Board of World Triathlon has approved the restart of the Olympic and Paralympic qualification rankings for Tokyo 2020 from May 1.

The 2021 Asian Triathlon Championships, scheduled for Hatsukaichi, Japan from April 23-25, will also be counted as an exception as it takes place prior to the date of the restart.

The Olympic qualification period will remain open until no later than June 21, while for the Paralympics the qualification period will be open until July 15.

The restart of the Olympic qualification period will mean that athletes will have the opportunity to compete in a total of six events:

*Two World Triathlon Championship Series in Yokohama (May 15) and Leeds (UK)

*Four World Triathlon Cups in Osaka (May 8-9), Lisbon (Portugal), Arzachena (Italy) and Huatulco (Mexico).

The remaining continental championships and the mixed relay Olympic qualification events are also planned to be held during the qualification period. The world rankings will also reopen on May 1.

The restart of the Paralympic qualification period will mean that athletes will have the opportunity to compete in at least four events, including World Triathlon Para Series and World Triathlon Para Cups. The remaining continental championship events are also to be held during the qualification period. The para triathlon world rankings will also be reopened on May 1.

The standings were frozen last March due to the worldwide impact of the pandemic.

*In the WT Executive Board meeting, held via videoconference, Byambaa Tsagaanbaatar (Mongolia) has been nominated as a Technical Official for the Tokyo Paralympic Games as a replacement for a TO who resigned.
