King of Malaysia praises new badminton hero Lee Zii Jia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, March 23, 2021: His Majesty the King of Malaysia Al-Sultan Abdullah has sent his personal congratulations to the country’s new sports hero – Lee Zii Jia.

The 22-year-old badminton ace from Kedah produced a memorable performance to win the Yonex All England Open title at Birmingham on Sunday, March 21, sparking wild celebrations around Malaysia and beyond.

His success brought a special message of congratulations from His Majesty the King.

A statement said that His Majesty felt “joy and pride” with Lee’s success and that his victory had brought honour to the country of Malaysia around the world. 

“Indeed, his success will surely make all Malaysians happy,” said the statement.

His Majesty added that he hoped Lee’s success would encourage him to train even harder and become a more brilliant player in the future, and that his victory would inspire all Malaysians to work hard in their own walk of life.

“His Majesty wishes Lee Zii Jia good luck. May he be blessed with continuous excellent success and continue to make the name of the country in the world,” the statement added.

His Majesty also took this opportunity to express his appreciation of the Badminton Association of Malaysia, under the helm of Tan Sri Mohamad Norza bin Zakaria, and the coaches for the success of Lee Zii Jia.

Lee’s victory - Malaysia’s first All England title in four years - not only caught the attention of Malaysians from all walks of life but also prompted Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, cabinet ministers and other politicians to sing his praises, Bernama news agency reports.

A delighted Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican was quick to congratulate Zii Jia via a special video call.

“All my cabinet colleagues and ministers including the Prime Minister asked me to convey how proud they are on your victory. You had fought until the last drop; I have always had faith in you.”
