QOC marks 1979 founding with tribute to six presidents

Doha, Qatar, March 15, 2021: The Qatar Olympic Committee marked the 42nd anniversary of its founding on March 14, 1979 by acknowledging the contribution of the six QOC Presidents.

In a Twitter social media post, Team Qatar said: “On this day March 14th 1979, Qatar Olympic Committee was founded. Growing every year, with more success to come.”

The post highlighted the six Presidents under the banner “Successive administrations and continuous success”.

The first QOC President, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al-Thani, led the organisation from 1979 to 1991.

HH Sheikh Abdullah was succeeded by HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalid Al-Thani (1991-1993), HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Fahad Al-Thani (1993-95), HE Sheikh Saoud bin Khalid Al-Thani (1995-2000), HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani (2000-2015) and the current President, HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani (2015-present).

Among the many highlights of Qatar’s development into a global hub for international sport was the hosting of the 15th Asian Games in 2006.

The QOC was recognised by the International Olympic Committee on January 1, 1980.
